The sublimation inkjet transfer process currently in use by us, was only introduced in October of 1996. The very following year it was voted best new technology at the International Awards Market in Las Vegas and in November 1997 we had our first opportunity to try this new technology. By early February of 1998 (just in time for Valentine's Day), we at S.A. Photo Mugs became the first full time users of this remarkable imaging process on the African continent. Feeling a bit like pioneers in the field, we sometimes had to learn the hard way, experimenting with, testing and evaluating heat transfer presses, substrates, printers, inks and papers. Now, several years down the line we feel that it was worth the learning experience and one very important lesson has been to stick to tried, tested and proven equipment and materials.
What really makes the sublimation process superior to others ? The image is printed, using special sublimation inks, and transfered directly to the substrate, (polyesters, polymer coated ceramics, metals, wood etc.). In the sublimation process, the inks turn from solids to gas when heated, are absorbed by the coating and embedded upon cooling down No special papers, ribbons or photocopiers are required and the transfer is therefor a very high quality, first generation copy. The image quality rivals that of offset printing, is far superior to silkscreen, transfers made by thermal printers or photocopier transfers onto coated papers. Mug surfaces are mirror-smooth and microwave and dishwasher safe. Because a transfer is printed for every item, there is no minimum order quantity and every mug or plate can be individually customized with different images names and messages.
We have already become one of the foremost creators of customized coffee mugs, photo plates and tiles, metal plaques and other gift objects. We are sole suppliers of the ,"Sublime" T shirt; the first shirt manufactured locally, especially for the high image quality that full sublimation offers. Our shirt features a 100% polyester exterior, backed by a 100% brushed cotton on the inside. Beautiful and exciting new sport shirt materials, polysatins for cushion covers and a host of other items, also available.
As for sublimation coated mugs, we use only high quality imported products.
Sublimation inks are available in pre-loaded cartridges for the popular Epson subli-printers. We also sell inks in 100 ml bottles to recharge your own cartridges or for your continuous ink supply system.
Not all of our products are produced by the sublimation process however. We use a variety of other materials as well as our very own Decoglaze process for some articles. Where quantities justify this, coffee mugs and tiles are decorated with screen-printed decals and fired, and T shirts are frequently silk screened or decorated by means of thermal (CLC & CLP) transfer papers. We offer a choice of techniques and prices.
As far as our prime interest, photography, is concerned, we use only state of the art digital equipment.
